Linking Science with the Community

The men and women who volunteer to participate in research studies
are really the unsung heroes of the effort to improve health care for all
seniors.

Harvard Cooperative Program on Aging is open to people of all ages and
backgrounds, those with and without health problems
  • is dedicated to good health through research and education
  • matches members with studies on aging in the Boston area
  • provides education to members and to the community about healthy
aging through newsletters, presentations, seminars and conferences.

Our researchers want to learn about normal aging and disease processes to
help people maintain high quality of life and live independently longer.

Members of the Cooperative benefit by:

  • receiving free member's newsletter with health-promoting information
  • learning more about their own health
  • helping to improve medical care for themselves and future generations
by adding to the knowledge we have about aging
  • receiving payment for participating in some studies.

Members of the Cooperative are asked to:

  • fill out a confidential health questionnaire
  • receive mailed information about studies going on in the Boston area
  • if interested, contact the study team for more information
  • decide whether or not to take part in the studies.

Members participate in studies about:

  • physical changes that occur with aging
  • memory and thought processes
  • diseases such as Parkinson's, Alzheimers, diabetes, cancer
  • sensory changes such as hearing loss, balance
  • the aging heart
  • joint and bone health
  • and many more important health issues.

Study teams who use the Cooperative to find participants are from Harvard
Medical School,  the Institute for Aging Research at Hebrew SeniorLife, and
other schools and hospitals in the Boston area.

All studies that use the Cooperative are approved by Institutional Review
Boards and comply with all laws concerning protection of participants.
Participation in research studies is always voluntary and participants may
withdraw at any time.
CONFIDENTIALITY is our highest priority.
